New games on PC in 2022

What are the best new PC games 2023? Perhaps you have just been paid, bank account fat with virtual dosh, or you simply want to get caught up with the latest PC games because they are, well, new and shiny.

It is all well and good starting another daring round of PUBG, taking on a new 100-hour Football Manager save, or yet another The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim adventure but, as much as we love setting mammoths ablaze, there are plenty of new PC games that will more than supply your gaming fix. You don’t want to be the person who isn’t In The Know now, do you?

The best new PC games in 2023 are:

The best new games - Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol is a third-person, sci-fi action horror that drops you into the unfortunate shoes of Jacob Lee, a cargo runner that ends up wrongfully incarcerated in Black Iron Prison on Jupiter’s eponymous moon. Your time behind bars is drastically cut short by a viral outbreak known only as the biophage, which rapidly takes hold of the prison populace and mutates them into terrifying creatures. While Jacob’s first priority is to escape, he’s unwittingly drawn into the tangled web of conspiracy surrounding the biophage’s murky origins, while also being forced to confront his own chequered past.

This is an obvious spiritual successor to Dead Space, and as such it doesn’t stray too far from the foundation blocks of its predecessor. You can expect a diegetic UI, gruesome death animations, and kinetic abilities that prove useful both in and out of combat. However, its scrappy, melee-focused combat system certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste; while there are ranged weapons, these must be used sparingly and tactically to conserve your ammo. More often than not, it’s the stun baton and dodge system that’ll help keep you alive as you go up against the horde of biophage mutations standing between you and the enigmatic Warden Cole in The Callisto Protocol.

Best new PC games: Tower of Fantasy. Image shows an anime woman pointing a gun at something off camera. There are futuristic buildings behind her.

Tower of Fantasy

You’ve probably heard of this one before, because all of the internet seems to be talking about it at the moment. When a free game takes off, it really takes off. Following in the footsteps of Genshin Impact, this is an MMO open world action RPG with an anime aesthetic and gacha mechanics that you use to unlock additional characters and weapons.

The game is set in the distant future and takes place on the planet Aida. Here humans have settled after the Earth has become increasingly uninhabitable. On this planet, they discover omnium, an extremely powerful energy source… Although in their ignorance they inadvertently caused a cataclysmic event, wiping out a chunk of their population and creating all kinds of monsters in the surrounding environment. Once you step into this world, you’ll have no shortage of things to do, from mucking around with friends, to crafting, fighting monsters, and making food. It’s easy to spend hundreds of hours on Tower of Fantasy.

The best new PC games - Cult of the Lamb

Cult of the Lamb

In this dark, yet cutesy roguelike, what starts off as certain death when four mysterious figures try to sacrifice you, soon turns into a deal with the devil, when he saves you and then tasks you with starting a cult in his name. Once you work through the tutorial, you’re quickly introduced to your base and earn your first loyal follower who you can instruct to get started on chopping trees and collecting resources to build houses and facilities.

To get more followers, you must venture out into the wild to complete levels, choosing paths to obtain helpful items all while building up your cult. The more followers you have, the higher the level, and you can suck the devotion from your loyal worshipers to unlock things and level up further. Cult of the Lamb is an accessible roguelike, great for newcomers to the genre as there’s not much punishment in death and not too many controls to get to grips with, but check out our beginner’s Cult of the Lamb guide for help on getting started.

The best new PC games - Disney Dreamlight Valley

Disney Dreamlight Valley

If games like Animal Crossing are your thing, then 2022’s most popular new life sim Disney Dreamlight Valley might be up your street, putting you in charge of a cute and colourful village filled with your favourite Disney and Pixar characters. It doesn’t have quite as much building and customisation appeal as Animal Crossing, though you can move the buildings, foliage, and footpaths, but it makes up for it with story depth and questlines. These unique friendship quests give you more reason to keep revisiting than just checking in on villagers, stocking up from the local shop, and reeling in the same fish.

The best new PC games - Football Manager 2023

Football Manager 2023

The latest yearly instalment to the Football Manager series, 2023 is an easy inclusion because it’s simply the best football management simulator we’ve ever seen. The improvements from the last game to this one are small, but while it only takes small steps forwards, it doesn’t take any backwards, meaning this is the perfect starting point if you’re new to the series or if you haven’t played an FM game before.

Whether you want to start off strong as a footballing titan such as Real Madrid, you want to take a lower tier club to the heights of the Champions League, or you want to be as realistic as possible and start your career unemployed, before you know it you’ll have lost hundreds of hours celebrating your success – or not, if you end up getting sacked in the morning.

New game A Plague Tale Requiem

A Plague Tale Requiem

An action-adventure game and the worthy successor to A Plague Tale: Innocence, we raved about Requiem’s character development, plotline and many, many rats in our Plague Tale Requiem review, saying, “A Plague Tale Requiem is much the same as Innocence in terms of gameplay, but its character development and blood-soaked universe make it an absolute pleasure to play.”

In a bid to control Hugo’s curse, and hopefully cure it, Amicia and Hugo escape their homeland and venture to new cities and regions. You can either choose to land killer blows on enemies or skulk in the shadows and approach it like a stealth game.

Best new games, Return to Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island

In this delightful return to Lucasarts adored Monkey Island games, the adventures of Guybrush Threepwood continue. This time, you’re closer to the secret than ever, but with LeChuck and the mighty pirate Madison on your tail, it’s time to solve puzzles and wreck a few things on the way.

This nostalgia trip is well worth all the praise, with returning characters, locations, and fond throwbacks to the original games sprawled throughout this wonderful point and click game.

New game, Stray

Stray

If you haven’t heard of this adorable indie game, you’re in for a treat. Stray is about an adventurous cat that becomes caught in a city inhabited by robots, who must journey through dangers and obstacles, solving puzzles and discovering the mysterious at the centre of the Walled City.

We raved about this game in our Stray review, saying “Stray merges feline mayhem with a classic cyberpunk setting, inviting you to explore its neon dystopia while never taking itself too seriously.” It’s a mostly linear journey through different areas of the city, and in good ol’ cat fashion, you can even get your head stuck in a paper bag.

New game, MultiVersus

MultiVersus

This new fighting game is currently in open beta and has already proven popular in the genre, mainly due to its exceptional roster of heroes including some of the Game of Thrones characters and even the cast of Scooby-Doo. There are a ton of characters to unlock in Multiversus, and we’ve put together a Multiversus tier list to get you started. Be sure to keep an eye on new Multiversus characters, and to save your wallet, all the Multiversus free characters in rotation.

The best new games, Norco

Norco

Set in the real town of Norco, New Orleans, this point and click adventure game places you in the middle of the titular town as you search for your missing brother. Between the cerulean landscape masked by tufts of marred grey smog, is a story much bigger than the one you landed in. The design is gorgeous and the journey is both relaxing and electrifying, akin to games like Kentucky Route Zero and Beneath a Steel Sky.

The best new games, The Quarry

The Quarry

From the makers of The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry sees an unwitting party of teen counsellors disturbed while enjoying their last night of summer camp, and instead flung into an 80s horror. Not dissimilar to Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn, and Jason Voorhees certainly wouldn’t look out of place emerging from the dark woods.

Our teens grapple with a much larger threat than petty squabbles among friends, as blood-hungry villagers descend and things lurk in the woods beyond. To add weight to the choices you make, and of course, how quickly you press the keys, there are nine playable characters – all of which you can get out alive.

New games in 2022, V Rising

V Rising

V Rising is currently in Steam Early Access, and has already become an instant hit. It’s been likened to another early access survival game, Valheim, which released in early 2021. In this isometric open-world game, you and your pals play as weak vampires that must regain strength by hunting for blood and building up your knowledge of the world after a long slumber in a coffin.

You can play solo or online with or against other vampires fighting all sorts of unholy monsters and evil creatures, all the while evading daylight and building a base worthy of Dracula. Keen to get stuck in? Here’s our ultimate beginner’s guide to V Rising, and how to build a base in V Rising, as well as all the best V Rising weapons.
