By now you’ve probably heard a lot of hype around Amazon Games’ recently launched massively multiplayer role-playing game, New World.
Beyond its wondrous environments, captivating lore, and addictive combat, the game also has a unique approach to character development. In New World’s opening season, classes are out, and bold new looks are in.
What we mean by that is that your build is not determined by a rigid class structure – in fact, there are no classes in New World. You are free to build your character however you want to, and you can change that path at any time. Every character created in New World is entirely unique, and you are free to customise them to your heart’s content. But perfecting your outfit is about much more than just colour coordination – you’ll need to experiment with different gear combinations and switch your setup on the fly to achieve the best results.
Ultimate Weapons
In a land filled with undead pirates, man-eating ghouls, and possessed beasts, you’ll need a strong weapon by your side. Aeternum’s hottest tools of destruction are the Legendary weapons – arms that are acquired late in the game and possess incredible destructive power. Attributes for New World’s weapons roll on a range, so you won’t be guaranteed the top damage stat, but you will certainly enjoy some very helpful perks.

Our current favourite is the legendary sword, Al’kazor. This righteous blade is this season’s hot ticket item – only wieldable by the most accomplished warriors in the land. The gem-adorned hilt just screams ‘high class’, and should anyone dispute your fashion choices, its max damage score of 612 will ensure that their critiques don’t make it to the Aeternum gossip rags.
If you’re more of a long-range fighter, there are plenty of snazzy muskets that can be found or crafted. We’re particularly partial to the Ancient Intentions. This classy musket sports a blue and gold colour scheme and a tasty max damage stat of 765. As an added bonus, this enviable firearm grants the user 93% increased accuracy – you won’t miss with this in your arsenal.
Skill Shot
As there is no class system in New World, your progression in terms of skills and abilities is tied to which weapons you use. This means that you have complete freedom to build your character how you please and switch their progression to a new route whenever it suits you.

For example, bow weapons are skewed towards long-range fighting, affording abilities such as the evade shot, which allows you to get distance from your enemy while dealing high damage. Each weapon class has two skill trees to choose from – the Bow class offers the Skirmisher tree, which focuses on manoeuvrability, and the Hunter tree, which leans on offensive power.
If you’re willing to sacrifice distance for strength, why not opt for a Great Axe weapon. The Reaper tree grants high single-target damage, along with self-healing, while the Mauler tree grants access to savage crowd-control abilities that will allow you to go up against hordes of enemies with ease.
There are 11 varied weapon classes in New World, so we recommend experimenting with as many as you can to get a sense for which weapon suits your playstyle. Explore far and wide, gather materials, craft gear, and find the path that works for you!

Armour Up
Of course, there’s more to a good setup than just a weapon. While charging head forth into combat almost nude is certainly an option, you’ll probably prefer a strong armour set that looks great and fends off the many arrows, blades, and claws that will come your way during your adventure. Much like New World’s weapons, armour items also come with a degree of randomisation, and you’ll have to venture into New World’s endgame to discover the most powerful items.
This season, ‘Avenging’ armour is in. This cagey armour set stands strong against corruption – while it might not be the most comfortable attire, you won’t have to worry about that pesky evil energy creeping in. Pair the Avenging Slats with the breezy Avenging War Kilt to be the envy of your war buddies. Don’t forget to complete the set with the Avenging Bracers, Avenging Head Cage, and Avenging Pauldrons for a legendary look.
There are hundreds of combinations of weapons, armour, and skills to discover in New World, so why not experiment and find the style that suits you? New World is available right now on Steam or directly from Amazon.
