There are a lot of animals I don’t care about. For instance, I couldn’t give two hoots about ants. Or lemurs. But show me some footage of them with David Attenborough’s soothing but authoritative voice narrating their antics, and I’m suddenly hooked.
The nature boffin and documentary maker’s latest project, Conquest of the Skies, is being filmed for the Oculus Rift. Viewers will be able to witness panoramic scenes from the jungles of Borneo, filmed using a special 360° camera setup that utilises eight different cameras.
It’s this sort of thing – not necessarily nature documentaries, but broader entertainment – that will bring the Oculus Rift and VR in general into the mainstream consciousness, turning it from a gaming device into the ubiquitous media device both Oculus VR and Facebook believe it can become.
Atlantic Productions is putting together Conquest of the Skies. Commercial director John Morris said “In terms of the creative challenge, we look at this as being comparable to the beginning of the film industry.”
There are no details yet on how Rift owners will be able to get the documentary.
