Jeff Kaplan “dreams” about Overwatch spin-off games and movies

Would you play an Overwatch spin-off or watch an Overwatch movie? You might be in luck

If Overwatch 2‘s announcement wasn’t enough to satisfy your craving for Blizzard’s team shooter, the company has now hinted it wants to make Overwatch spin-off games and movies.

Director Jeff Kaplan has told Edge magazine (issue 340) that his team “dreams” of making more games in the Overwatch universe – even if they’re not shooters.

When asked about the team’s vision for Overwatch’s future, Kaplan replies: “We’ve always thought of Overwatch as a universe, not a single game. The original game was the first expression of Overwatch, but we dream of what other forms of media could feature Overwatch. Movies? An animated series? What other game types would everyone love to see in the Overwatch universe? We hope that the characters of Overwatch exist far into the future and are expressed in ways that we can’t even imagine today.”

Blizzard’s parent company, Activision Blizzard, has previously stated it would like to make a film version of the game whose animated shorts are as famous as its gameplay. Now we know the development team dreams of it too.

Answering an earlier question, Kaplan states his view that Overwatch 2 is “clearly a sequel”, despite some people claiming it’s more of an expansion: “Overwatch 2 is an order of magnitude larger than the original game, and therefore we consider it a sequel.”

While we don’t have an Overwatch 2 release date to mark on our calendars just yet, just the knowledge it’s coming will be enough for many people – we just don’t know when.
