Washington D.C. and Hangzhou are reportedly joining the Overwatch League

Two more teams might be joining the Overwatch League ahead of the transfer window

Washington D.C. and Hangzhou are set to join season two of the Overwatch League, according to a recent report by ESPN. The two teams would officially join Atlanta and Guangzhou if confirmed, and possibly Paris and Toronto too.

The Washington D.C. slot will be funded by an investment group led by Mark Ein, the owner of the Washington Kastles, and a minority owner of aXiomatic, the parent company of esports organisation Team Liquid. Hangzhou’s slot will be entirely funded by Chinese media website, Bilibili.

Although we’re still waiting on confirmation from Blizzard about the new teams, the upcoming transfer window for expansion teams, which starts this weekend, means we should know soon.

However, ESPN’s report, which cites sources close to the League, also implies that two more teams might also be added season two, increasing Blizzard’s team target from 18 to 20 due to “last-minute interest from a number of buyers.” Slots are believed to be worth between $30-60 million, dependent on the region, so it’s a hefty investment to make last minute.

While Blizzard has been busy negotiating with new investors though, the core Overwatch League teams have cut a number of players from their rosters, so a number of high-profile players are up for grabs.

Expansion teams can start signing free agents from Sunday (September 9) to bolster their rosters ahead of the season, with the window opening to all teams on October 8.
