I feel like it's one of those abstract, fluid unquantifiables - what makes one FPS game feel good versus another? I know when I play it. Doom. Half-Life. FEAR. Trepang2. But I still can't fully reverse engineer the dynamics. With that in mind, Pigface - despite its grim, sleazy, DV-camera aesthetic - is ever so slightly magical. It's a horrible game criticism cliche, and it doesn't tell you enough, but at the same time, I know you know what I mean when I say that the shooting here feels great. Somewhere between the GoldSrc classics of Valve's heyday and the brutality of Hotline Miami and Rockstar's Manhunt, armed with a new publisher, Pigface is definitely one to watch.
You play Exit, an expert killer with an obscure but no doubt dark past. Kidnapped and dragged to an abandoned warehouse, your 'benefactor' has drilled a bomb inside your skull, and if you don't do what he says, he'll hit the detonator. Shotguns. Pistols. Rifles. Claw hammers. With a thrown together arsenal of guns and tools, you embark on a series of ultra-bloody killing sprees. Brutal and bleak, Pigface is an FPS by way of a horror game.
Created by a single developer, working under the name titolovesyou, I played the demo for Pigface last year. Guns feel weighty and unwieldy - unlike a lot of shooters, they're not an extension of the character's arm, and killing with them takes skill. On the contrary, even a single bullet is lethal. If you shoot an enemy in the leg, he'll fall over, roll on the ground, and struggle to get back up.
While we don't have a release date, Pigface has just been signed by DreadXP, the same publisher behind one of 2024's best sleeper-hit RPGs, Dread Delusion, and the seriously frightening horror hit The Mortuary Assistant. If you want to wishlist it, you can do that right here.
