Planetside 2 is one, and celebrating the fact with double XP til Sunday

Planetside 2 is one-year-old. You can tell, because it’s starting to run a lot faster, and its parents are getting an awful lot more sleep than they did 12 months ago. SOE are commemorating the year past and the six million players who’ve pledged to-the-death allegiance to either Terrans, Vanu or NC with double XP and, um, a $39.99 USD anniversary bundle – home to special camos, weapons, decals and a six-month heroic boost.

Regardless of whether or not you buy into that, however, you can enjoy a look back over the massively-multiplayer man-shooter’s short history.

“We knew we had something special when we launched PlanetSide 2,” sniffed creative director Matt Higby. “Massive air, vehicle, and infantry battles, gorgeous graphics, adrenaline action and a vibrant community – it has it all and there is nothing else like it.

“We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished this past year,” he went on, raising his voice above the opening strains of the orchestra. “The successes we’ve experienced worldwide prove we have a winning formula with PlanetSide 2 on PC, and we can’t wait to see how the game and community will grow when we launch it on the PlayStation 4 next year.”

Since launch, PlanetSide 2 has been witness to nearly 10 million base flips, nigh on 93 billion fired shots, and about 878 million kills (that’s not a good hit-rate, everyone).

In the past year, it’s also became the first game to enable streaming directly to Twitch with a single clock, spread its tentrils to Russia, South Korea, China and Brazil, and began to drift into eSports with MLG. The jury’s still out on that last move.

Still: SOE reckon they’ve improved performance by about 30% with their recent Operation: Make Faster Game patch, and plan to spend the next year ushering in a new continent (swampy Hossin) and console (the PS4).
