I don't know where you pulled that last bit of information from, but there are not guilds in Elite (and unlikely to be). Player factions are already in the game (since 1.4), but that's not the same as a guild (a group entity with resources that can be handed out to it's members).

Also, the price is only right for existing players that pre-order. The expansion is £29.99 to existing players which comes with a bonus ship. For new players who don't have the core game already, they will have to pay £39.99 for Horizons + Elite, while Elite will remain for sale.
Horizons is an optional paid expansion - the core game will be getting an update (1.5), at the same time Horizons is released, and will continue to get updates.
Horizons is not episodic content (like Half-Life 2 Episode 2) it is more along the lines of BattleField 2: Special Forces - an expansion that adds extra stuff if you choose to buy it.
The core game continues to expand and new mechanics from the expansion will bleed into the core game (looting & crafting).

I don't like the term "Best space game" as it implies some form of total superiority.
Elite: Dangerous is a really good game and constantly growing and evolving. But it is somewhat unique.
Saying any game is better or worse is misleading and encouraging adversarial attitudes.
Some people don't like Elite because it lacks a narrative. No scripted story to lead them through the game, while others rejoice in the open nature of the game, being allowed to do what they want, whenever they want. Graphically, it's amazing. But "best"? No. It's not a football team, it's a space sim.
On the topic of the actual game, the SRV stuff looks really great and I can't wait until Christmas when I'll be driving like a lunatic around my nearest moon. Buggy racing is best played to a "Dukes of Hazzard" soundtrack....

Having played for well over a year, I've never run out of things to do. I've got cash and assets in the game close to 800M credits, but that's not the point. I have fun and the money is a side-effect. I've owned all the ships at one time or another, but have settled on have three I use all the time. Playing three hours a day, I have to choose an activity, between exploring, mining, trading with one group or engaging in combat with another. Several friends play the game outside of the groups I play with, so if I spot one of them online, we usually meet up in game and pursue a community goal or try and help new players.
Elite is not, nor even has been a race to the finish any more than a flight to Australia and back is "seeing the whole world".
