A fine review, Rob. Hope you can squeeze the game in your 3MA schedule and discuss the finer points with Bruce and Troy.
Until they nerf the ridiculous calorie burn for even the most leisurely activities, I'm not touching it again. The last I played, you had to eat the energy equivalent of 20 Big Macs each day just to survive strolling around.
And also, besides foraging for enormous quantities of food that would feed Mr. Olympia and two runner-ups, there's really not much else to do in The Long Dark.
I had exactly the same problem. I love the style, setting and mechanics, but the food burn is just too nagging.
I so hope to be wrong, but it seems to me that Blow will only confirm the Schafer theorem: "Creative folk should not be in charge of finances."

I've been clearing out my backlog so I played:
+ Warlock: Master of the Arcane
+ Hearts of Iron II Doomsday (played as Romania and got crushed as the last standing Axis country in late 1946 by the Soviets who were also fighting against the Western Allies since 1940)
+ Disciples III Renaissance
+ Civilization V BNW (as Persia)
