"That, combined with the added expense of creating new models and voices for women soldiers would make the game pricey, apparently."

This is the real reason it isn't happening. At the end of the day, adding women to the game isn't going to make it sell many more copies than if they didn't. It's a big added expense, with a relativity small return.

The rest of the statements made above feel like the sexist opinions of some crappy boss who doesn't get it. At the end of the day, money drives the decisions of a company like this, and something that costs a lot of money but doesn't make much in return is bound to get scraped; which I feel is unfortunate in this case because it would have been interesting to see what they could have done.

While on the one hand I understand their decision, I also have to ask if the same type of mod had come out featuring only African people, or only Asians, would it have likewise been pulled? And if not, aren't they participating in an act of discrimination themselves?Reply
AnAuldWolf Avatar

It doesn't work that way and you know it. You're just trying to manipulate people who're too ignorant to know better. I don't like that. I don't like that at all. I'm sick and tired of manipulators.

You know as well as I do that if a group has been discriminated against for as long as another group has known them, almost, then they're owed some recompense for that. If that mod existed it wouldn't be bigotry so much as showing you what it feels like, it would be the pendulum swinging back the other way. It'd be instead seen as a greater presence of an ethnicity that's experienced a lot of prejudice and has gotten white-washed out of existence far too many times in far too many sources.

It would just be an empowering fantasy, as they're just using it as a tool to help others understand what it's like. Or they'd use it as a coping mechanism to get away from the terrible white people who'd discriminated against them for so long in the first place, as well you know.

So, no. Not even remotely the same. Come off it.

The thing that I've learned from all of this is that someone needs to make a website that features real world news but replaces pictures of real events with applicable screenshots from games.

I hate to be that guy, but I kind of want a new art style. From what I've seen the whole thing looks a little cartoony to me.

I'm loving what I'm hearing about the gameplay changes, those sound fantastic. But looking at screenshots, I feel like the units are too large, the landscape is too smooth, the forests aren't dense enough, and everything is very bright.

I wouldn't have expected realistic graphics. But I wish that the art style reflected the grand strategy nature of the game. I want to feel like I'm commanding armies rather than squads. And that I have cities rather than hamlets. And that my way is impeded by large jagged mountains rather than small rocky knolls. I guess that when I imagined Civ 6 I envisioned a game in that epic style.

I realize that all of the Civ games have always leaned in this artistic direction, but in the past I felt like it was the result of hardware limitations that restricted the developers ability to truly make their worlds grand. With this iteration, it's clearly an artistic choice.

Fortunately I'm not the kind of person who plays a game just for its graphics. And, it's still a little too early to be making any final judgements. If the gameplay hold up as well as it sounds like it might, this will be a must play for me. But so far my feelings towards the game have definitely been dampened by its childish appearance.Reply

I think they may have made the rather classic screenshots-but-no-trailer error where the game actually looks alright in motion, or at least when you're trying to determine things rather than just staring at a landscape. I don't think you're the only one feeling that way about the shots we've seen so far though.

Steam Autumn and Winter 2015 sale dates revealed, no flash or daily salesSteam Autumn and Winter 2015 sale dates revealed, no flash or daily sales

It makes sense with the current return policy. You used to have to take a gamble when you bought your game, hoping that it was at its lowest sale point. If you guessed wrong, you were SOL. Now, you could buy your game, and then watch and if there is a lower price at any point of the sale, you could just return and re-buy it. Essentially, the return policy guarantee s that all copies will be sold at the lowest price point of the sale anyway. This change to the sale just removes the overhead of having to process millions of returns that would have occurred because of the special deals.Reply
Glen_Runciter Avatar

wait, couldn't they just forbid you for buying something again in the next few days after returning it?

I know that I don't qualify for the competition, but I thought that it would be fun to comment anyway.

I would bring back the UED(United Earth Directorate) from Brood Wars.

After their defeat, the people of Earth were thrown into a panic, knowing that eventually the Zerg would be coming for them and they were powerless to stop them. They began experimenting with all sorts of fringe technologies, modifing their genes and integrating technology right onto their own bodies, turning themselves into hideous cyborg monstrosities.

Now a shadow of their former selves, and consumed by fear and paranoia to the point of near madness, they return to the sector ready to duke it out in a grudge match with the Zerg, and anybody else who they view as standing in their way.

Would love to see Warcraft return to its RTS roots.

I have a lot of doubts about a decent cop game being possible - how do you gamify monotony?

The same way The Wire did. Turn that side of the job into the problem with the job.
