Its interesting that the genesis for both games was the desire to port ASL to the computer. Two different results from pretty much the same design objective.
Close Combat (CC) and Combat Mission (CM) have a bunch of similar systems, but like Rob stated the fundamental mechanics are very different - that is WEGO vs IGO-UGO. (think simultaneous turns vs ummm igo-ugo..lol)
A good point that you guys brought up in the podcast was that ASL has a very interactive turn sequence, and CM does a much better job of simulating that. Graphically, CM is much better than CC with their new CM2.x series of games. I have CM: Red Thunder and it looks great - and plays great as well.
Another game that may interest you is Graviteam Tactics - they are developing a new game (Mius Front - I assume its about the operations around Rostov. ) Its on sale on Steam this week - 75% off - its a steal at that price.
Thanks for the recommendation, looks interesting and seems to have had quite a good reception. Worth a shot for just over a fiver.
I must be a masochist, but Hearts of Iron 4 and Galactic Civ 3.... And, Offworld Trading Company. Edited to include XCOM 2. yeah baby...
Hi guys, I am Phil, gamertag is Misesfan. Feel free to add me as a Steam Friend. I am elderly soul at 48 (hell, 49 this new year) and remember the 'old days' fondly - mostly for my stamina, but mostly for actually looking forward to a monthly gaming mag (CGW was my preferred subscription) and reading about games! Anyways, I cannot do the WASD as nimbly as the young guys, but I can hold my own.
I mostly prefer strategy games, so of course I am a big fan of Fraser and Rob on Three Moves Ahead. Great podcast guys, keep them coming if you can. Send me a note if you want some MP on anything strategy related - but please note I am a working stiff with a gaggle of kids. So if you want me in Vent, then be prepared for some loud noise in the background. :)
I am late to the comment party here - but I just got the game, and damn - it is superb. Great review Fraser, and spot on.
/sigh - So now we have to hope for Cities:Skylines....
