There's freedom but not a great deal you can do with it

Hmm. Fraser I feel like you wrote this review focusing on what you perceive other people may criticise about the game. Although an objective approach, I think it's skewed your review unnecessarily. You talk about how there are often long periods of inactivity and how this could get boring, yet you admit that this isn't how you actually feel about it. You love the careful planning of peacetime as much as the frentic battle for survival or dominance.

Speaking for myself, I think your personal feelings maybe more in sync with most other players (they are with mine).

Peacetime is truly tense as this is the bedrock of your nation's success once conflict finally erupts. What you've managed to do when you did have a free hand is utterly instrumental in how the impending war will then play out. I love this element, as I think you do. That's why this is such a great game.

I've not played enough to fully assess the AI and its performance as an ally. I played as Australia, turning the country facist and joining the Axis powers. Japan invaded Papua and Borneo (allowing me to hold Papua as my own state), they even sent a division to protect my northern territories (after the navy of a French Vichy splinter faction had been taking far too much interest in the region).

My few complaints are that trade seems to be a one way street. Say I need 3 steel and his will cost me 1 factory, but Russia will sell me 7 steel for this one factory. I will then have a surplus of 4 steel. Yet, I cannot sell or stockpile this extra resource and that seems illogical and unrealistic to me.

Also, I feel that the linearity of the tech trees really takes away a lot of the choice and customisation (and therefore, as you elude to, also the interest). There are many decisions as to what to focus on (navy, electronics, etc) but within each subject the paths are largely laid out before you, limiting choice. I think I'd rather see pools of concepts which you can dip in and out of. Aside from that though, I've really enjoyed my time with the game so far and will be trying to understand it on a deeper level in the coming months.

I wonder how the reviewer would have felt had he never played a Fallout game before? I have never played a Fallout game before but have picked up Fallout 4 and hope it feels fresh enough that I enjoy it more than perhaps a Fallout veteran would.Reply

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen review snippet How long is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen? Would you stick with it through to the end?
I finally sat and sank about 5 hours into this last night. Wow. What a pleasant and awesome surprise. I only played it so I could safely remove it from my games list but now it will have to join Skyrim, Dark Souls and Witcher as first person RPGs to revisit time and again. It may be better than any of them also.

I've had the game on PS4 since Friday. It's really fantastic. A new benchmark in AAA games. The options, the customisation, the freedom - it's an amazing experience.Reply
