Survival platformer Rain World is coming out like umbrellas in a downpour on March 28

Rain World

If you’ve ever suffered from a suspicion that the domestic animals in your household would long outlive you in an end-of-the-world scenario, Rain World is your nightmares made playable. This strange, survival-focused platformer is coming to Steam on March 28.

Rain World’s protagonist is a slugcat, combining lovely and icky in a way backed up by its world – a vast, 1,600 room industrial environment slightly reminiscent of Fez, in that it evokes 16-bit while looking far prettier than any real 16-bit game ever could.

Our slugcat has been cast adrift by a terrible flood, and must reunite with their family – navigating ancient ruins, finding food and shelter and evading hungry creatures. Survival depends on stealth and cunning – Rain World has an odd, flooding-prone ecosystem for you to master.

Rain World will be published by Adult Swim, who have become a low-key but important force in PC gaming since the release of Jazzpunk three years ago. They became impossible to ignore last year, when you could find them in cahoots with Double Fine on Headlander. Perhaps they’re onto a winner here, with a unique-looking platformer that’s already aced one Kickstarter.
