The new version of ReShade boosts performance in DX12 and Vulkan

There’s a new version of ReShade available, and chances are it’ll help boost performance, regardless of what game you’re using it on. ReShade 4.5 includes a host of tweaks and changes, and they’ll help out both end users and shader developers who are using the mod to create graphics enhancements to make the PC’s prettiest games even prettier.

ReShade developer crosire posted the changelog to the official ReShade forum Saturday, as DSOGaming reports. No matter which graphics renderer you use for games, the latest ReShade build probably improves performance. Crosire says 4.5 makes major improvements to the backend for Vulkan, the effect compiler, and the user interface. ReShade 4.5 also includes “improved depth buffer detection in DX9 and DX12, display of preprocessor definitions as variable widgets and new options for shader developers to customize how settings should be displayed in the GUI.”

The changelog, which you can read in full here, goes into the specific details about what’s new and updated in 4.5.0 of ReShade, but the main takeaway is that it now generally runs better under both DirectX 9 and 12, as well as Vulkan, thanks to a host of optimizations.

ReShade, in case you’re unfamiliar, is a post-processing mod that works with just about any modern 3D game and lets you enhance the graphics and look as much or as little as you like. Your settings are saved in a text .ini file, which can then be shared with other players who want to use your prettiness settings.

Lately, ReShade has been used to add ray-tracing effects to games like Skyrim, The Witcher 3, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Quake. But even without the hardware-intensive ray tracing, ReShade has shown up on our lists of the best mods for Red Dead Redemption 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Fallout 4. The difference can either be subtle or stunning, or anything in between – it’s a remarkably versatile tool.
