Rise of the Tomb Raider Review

How sneaky can you be in Rise of the Tomb Raider?

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

Quite a lot. I haven't killed almost anyone in direct combat yet.

Semi-sneaky. Rise is not designed to be a stealth game, not does it become harder if you don't stealth, but Lara does have a few more quieter options available. Along with the silent bow and the ability to do stealth take downs, bushes now count as concealing cover and can be hidden in. Lara can climb trees to stay high enough out of view, and many areas can be bypassed if you stay silent.

How open is Rise of the Tomb Raider to explore?

Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Rise is frequently open to explore thanks to hub worlds. Imagine the game as a series of hourglasses, with the narrow section being the highly action-packed linear set-pieces, and the globes being the hub worlds. When in a hub, you can explore at your own pace and scour the worlds for collectibles, equipment, and side-quests. They're beautiful, authentic areas that are begging to be discovered, so well worth spending time on.

Perfect balance between story driven and open world, for my taste.

How well does Rise of the Tomb Raider let you develop your character?

Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Lara has access to three skill trees which can develop her abilities in fighting, hunting, and survival skills. Killing enemies and finding items nabs you XP, and when enough has been gained you are awarded a point to unlock a skill. Over the course of the game you earn enough XP to unlock most of them, but through a general playthrough it's easy to focus on a single branch of the tree or be a broad all-rounder.
There's crafting too, so you can augment Lara with new gear such as pouches for better carrying loads.

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

Very much so. You really make meaningful decisions from the start.

How hard are the puzzles in Rise of the Tomb Raider?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Rise's tomb puzzles are not hard in the manner of The Witness or Portal's late-game chambers, but they so require some thought. As with many other puzzle elements in games these days, they're mostly based on physics and involve Lara flooding areas, adjusting weights, and calibrating mechanisms. Oh, and jumping all over things she really shouldn't be.
There's a need to understand a bit of cause-and-effect, but provided you've a good grasp on logic you won't ever be stuck for too long. They're just puzzling enough to enable a bit of a 'eureka!' moment.

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

Not hard so far.

How much fun are the weapons in Rise of the Tomb Raider?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Really good fun. The bow remains a favourite thanks to its quick and silent approach, and these days it has poison gas arrows. But everything feels quite powerful, loud, and smooth to use. Compared to most third person shooters, Tomb Raiders gunplay feels a lot faster and looser, but in the right manner. It's not regimented and military like, but a fast scramble for survival.

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

Extremely. Lots of choices, upgrades, they feel good and feel reasonably powerful.

How does Rise of the Tomb Raider compare to the other Tomb Raider games?

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

Most polished, most fun yet.

Compared to the 2013 reboot, it's very similar, but expanded a great deal. It's still a very cinematic experience with lots of choreography when it comes to action set-pieces, and it remains combat heavy.
Looking back at the 'classic' Tomb Raider games, Rise is much more focused on being a third-person action game, where the older games are adventure platformers. Rise has far more puzzles than the 2013 reboot, but it's not as focused on them as previous games have been.

How believable is the story in Rise of the Tomb Raider?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

The story in Rise is about Lara's hunt for the Divine Source, the key to immortality. It's been hunted down by Trinity, an evil paramilitary group that are basically the Knights Templar. If you believe in all that hocus pocus supernatural stuff, then I guess the story is relatively grounded in that the places are (mostly) real.
Lara falls off things a lot though. The fact that she's still alive and well doesn't do any favours to believably. But what Tomb Raider lacks in realism and grounding, it makes up for in a feeling of authenticity. You do genuinely feel like an awesome, cliff-scaling archaeologist when playing through the story.

CarotideEtude (after 6 hours play time)

The story is believable and the game strikes a good balance between realism and fantasy.

How good is the Rise of the Tomb Raider story?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Believably aside, Rise has a solid yarn to spin. It feels far more traditional Tomb Raider compared to the surprisingly horror-led tale that was the previous game. It's a story of rebels vs evil organisation, which is a classic, and keeping power out of the incorrect hands. There's a welcome touch with Lara's relationship with her late father and her step-mother, but it doesn't quite ring as well as her relationships with her friends in the previous game.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Rise of the Tomb Raider sale?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

I think Tomb Raider is one of the best action games of the last few years, so I absolutely think it's worth the asking price. If you were less than blown away by the 2013 reboot, then it's worth waiting for Rise to drop a good few <insert currency here> before splashing out. It's not exactly more of the same, as those open hub worlds add a new angle, but it is very similar. The campaign is a solid length though, so if you go full price you're getting good mileage for a singleplayer only game.

Really quite astonishing: it's a truly beautiful game, with stunning landscapes, great attention to detail, and sharp character models. Right now, it's one of the best looking games on PC. Turn the hair effects up to maximum to see the future of digital ponytails.

How good are the sounds in Rise of the Tomb Raider?

Rise of the Tomb Raider is very good at sounding like priceless, irreplaceable ancient architecture crumbling, breaking, and exploding.
Overall it's pretty strong on audio, especially when it comes to voice performance. I think Camilla Luddington still has a little way to go before she's entirely convincing as Lara, but she's still pretty great in Rise.
