Sanctum 2 Review

Do you ever feel overwhelmed playing Sanctum 2?

There are a couple levels where I dropped in and the options for paths were a little overwhelming. Luckily you usually get to examine the map as much as you want before the first round. After you become familiar with the maps, its pretty straight forward.

Sometimes, but not often. The first few times you play you will loose, its all about working out how best to make them get too your base, giving them a long time to get there were you and your turrets can break them before they break you.

How good an FPS is Sanctum 2?

MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

Its not the best, but its passable. It feels more like an old arena shooter than a modern FPS. It definitely needs the Tower defense aspect to give it its edge.

I don't really see it as an FPS, more a TD with FPS aspects. If it wasn't for the TD aspects the game would be terrible!

How well does Sanctum 2 let you develop your character?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

There is a lot of variety. Each character has a unique ability, chooses 2 weapons from a dozen or so (One is locked per character until you reach a certain level) and three perks from a far larger list. The perks can reward certain play-styles, change the field or unlock completely new abilities. There are a lot of options, some good and some bad, and it pays to consider the map.

There many playable characters that each have uniqueness about them but you don't really 'Make them your own'. But that's not too say playing each of them isn't great!

Can you get away with just rushing the enemy in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 20 hours play time)

No, outside of early levels, it will become almost impossible to kill the waves of enemies without mazes and towers. The first wave can often be rushed, but it will quickly fall apart.

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 20 hours play time)

If you position yourself right you can get walker warriors to jump over at least half a tower base and end up on the other side. You can use this to force them to jump into earlier areas of your maze. I haven't been able to do it too reliably.

How much fun are the weapons in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

It varies a lot. Some guns like the Drone launcher (Sadly the best weapon in the game) are really very boring. Other weapons have really interesting features that can shape your tactics against different enemies. For instance knowing when enemies are arranged so an arcing shot from the tesla gun will go through weakspots.

Which characters would you recommend to starting players?

Skye is probably the most straight forward, keep firing on an enemy to get stronger. She is your best bet as a new player. SiMo requires precise aiming, but may be good for confident FPS players. Hagan needs to be close to do extra damage, which is risky until you understand enemy behavior, Sweet (my favorite) has a rocket launcher which could be unwieldy for someone new. Tsygan's crossbow takes time to reach its target, so it might be best to leave her for later too.

What strategies have you learned to survive in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

The most basic tower defense strategy is to build mazes consisting of long parallel corridors when possible. Additionally, its sometimes important to place your towers so they can take advantage of the extra time enemies spend rounding corners. On the FPS side of things, you can kite aggressive aliens around to delay them, which becomes very important in a few places. Its also good to prioritize the Soaker and Bobblehead aliens, which towers do not deal well with. The regenerating core perk is a wonderful choice in any survival map. Finally, when you get it, the Focus tower pairs with the range extender tower in a way that is almost game breaking.

How steep is the learning curve in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

They give you a lot of time to pick up the basics, but a few little difficulty spikes exist. The main (non-DLC) game is pretty simple for the most part, but some levels become very difficult with 'feats of strength' turned on.

Are the aliens in Sanctum 2 scary?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

No, they range from cute to maybe a little imposing, but they are not frightening.

Not really! Some are very odd looking but I don't think scary is the right word!

What is the future like in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

Its a bit dystopian with gleaming perfect cities with dark secrets and hidden slums. The technology is very high concept and clean looking in most of the levels, but clearly at odds both with the world, and the poorer communities.

Full of strange aliens that seemingly like walking through maze's of turrets.

How funny is Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

It keeps things light, but isn't laugh-out-loud funny. Snide comments and boasting between the characters and little easter-eggs will keep you smiling.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Sanctum 2 sale?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

Its been on sale a few times, that's when I got it. $25 for the game and all DLC is not bad at all, but I would say waiting is a smart move.

I would say waiting for sale is a good move. Its a great game but im not sure being $25 out of pocket would be worth it.

How good are the graphics in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

From a technical perspective they aren't the most impressive, things are somewhat simple. Some textures look a little flat, especially for large objects. However, the game has a very consistent style and it certainly looks good.

How good are the sounds in Sanctum 2?

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

Nothing spectacular. The voice clips are good and give characters some personality, and weapons all sound sufficiently sci-fi and powerful. The music is fine, but honestly I turned it off a long time ago for my personal collection.

Why do gamers keep coming back to Sanctum 2

361
MrAptronym (after 5 days 19 hours play time)

There is a simple, addictive quality to tower defense games. The optional challenges and survival mode add in a lot more playtime, but after a while its definitely the multiplayer. Its a fun game to play with friends, where you can coordinate your roles.
