‘Slay Dragons, Save Cats’ in The Elder Scrolls Online this fall

Two animal welfare charities get a helping hand through dragon slaying

Earlier this year Skyrim studio Bethesda teamed up with The Cat Rescue Foundation to help find homes for some real-life Khajiit. Now, The Elder Scrolls Online’s developer ZeniMax is also looking to help some little critters – it’s kicked off a campaign, pledging to donate $1 to animal charities for every five dragons players take down in the game, up to $200,000.

The ‘Slay Dragons, Save Cats’ campaign (via PCGamer) will support two animal charities, starting tomorrow and running until December 9, splitting donations evenly between them. The first, Best Friends Animal Society, works to establish no-kill shelters for dogs and cats across the United States, and runs the “largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as lifesaving programs.” The second, Four Paws, is an international charity that “is a strong, global and independent voice for animals under direct human influence,” focussing on issues such as animals in captivity.

The post says that players have already felled over a million dragons since the Elsweyr expansion for the Elder Scrolls Online brought them into the world of Tamriel back in June. With another two months to go before December 9, it looks like the target to reach up to $200,000 is achievable for dedicated dragon slayers.

During the event, there will also be in-game challenges and rewards to get your teeth into. Highlights include The Dawn of the Dragonguard, which runs from November 26 to December 8, and sees you take down dragons to “earn bonus loot and earn double rewards from the Wrathstone DLC, Elsweyr Chapter, Scalebreaker DLC, and Dragonhold DLC.” Oh, and there’s also one that’s just all about the mud balls at the end of the year. “Lots of mud balls,” apparently. So, there’s plenty of reason to get stuck into TESO’s event.

If you want to jump into the challenge and do your bit to help these awesome animal charities, head over to “the northern and southern Elsweyr zones (accessible via the Elsweyr Chapter or Dragonhold DLC) or in the Scalebreaker DLC dungeon ‘Lair of Maarselok’” where the dragons hang out and get slaying. You can track the progress of the campaign on the Slay Dragons, Save Cats website, where there’s also the option to donate to the charities directly.
