Plasma cannons and power swords in Space Hulk: Deathwing’s launch trailer

Space Hulk: Deathwing

Cops and robbers, pirates and ninjas, Space Marines and Tyranids. Some pairings just work, reflecting a dichotomy that resonates in its certainty, its absolutism, its confident assertion that life isn’t, in the end, all that confusing. There are no shades of grey, these great rivalries whisper. You either are or you aren’t.

Or I may be reading too much into it. Anyway, Space Hulk: Deathwing has got a launch trailer over on publisher Focus Home Interactive’s YouTube channel. It is appropriately grim and suitably dark.

The trailer showcases the many nasty aliens you’ll be exterminating as a Deathwing terminator, and the particle-spitting weapons you’ll be using to do so. If you’d like to see more, check out 17 minutes of gameplay from the campaign.

The titular Deathwing are the first company of the Dark Angels space marine chapter. When one of their Librarians – space marines with psychic powers – gets a vision of some sinister threat, they must investigate a massive space hulk “deposited in Imperial space by the uncaring tides of the Warp.” The problem: it’s infested with Tyranids, the ugliest and angriest aliens in Warhammer 40,000’s hostile universe. You’ll choose from a variety of classes and loadouts as you clear them out, leveling up skill trees, deploying psychic powers and ordering around your AI or human squadmates.

Space Hulk: Deathwing’s campaign is co-written by Gav Thorpe, a long-time employee of Warhammer makers Games Workshop and Dark Angels expert. Thorpe has written rulebooks for GW before, as well as in-universe fiction for their Black Library label.

Space Hulk: Deathwing is out on December 14. If you’re already convinced, pre-ordering before then will get you a 15% discount and a new in-game weapon, the Lost Mace of Corswain. Without the discount, it’ll cost you £29.99, or $39.99 USD.
