Space Hulk: Deathwing’s latest trailer is full of Toby Longsworth and shoulder pads

Space Hulk: Deathwing trailer

If you’re really into your gravelly voiceovers and dramatically overwrought speeches then the Gamescom trailer for Space hulk: Deathwing is right up your street. The cinematic trailer for the upcoming first-person shooter is all mood and grit, and has Toby Longworth – a fan-favourite narrator for many of the Warhammer 40,000 audiobooks – reading out prose that’s rife with lines like “with blood-anointed swords aloft,” and “advance we into dread’s dark shade”. Honestly, it’s brilliant.

The speech itself is the Dark Angel’s Battle Hymn of Vengeance, and is so Warhammer 40,000 they don’t even need to include it in the game’s title. It’s also the perfect background for what’s actually going on in the trailer: a squad of Dark Angels facing off against an unending horde of Genestealers, deep in the depths of one of the crumbling ships that makes up the titular space hulk, a mass of abandoned, derelict space ships.

The game is being written by renowned 40K author Gavin Thorpe, who also wrote the aforementioned Battle Hymn of Vengeance. That means we should be expecting plenty more melodrama when the PC exclusive squad-based shooter finally launches sometime this year. It’s still unknown whether Toby Longsworth will be providing more voice work for the game – we certainly hope so.
