Star Citizen raises $14m, unlocks new features; still has $2m of stretch goals

Despite its Kickstarter being completed long ago, Star Citizen is still steadily filling its coffers through crowdfunding. Roberts Space Industries have just announced that they’ve managed to pass $14 million in backing, unlocking hibernation mode and a Star Citizen documentary.

Not content with all that money, there are still another $2 million of stretch goals to go.

“We can hardly believe it – we’ve already hit the $14 million level,” writes the game’s creator Chris Roberts. “Fans are making Star Citizen the first-ever crowdfunded AAA game and we’re very excited about the fact that we get to share the process with you. Together, we are exploring new territory in game development.”

The features unlocked at $14 million are a new hibernation mode, allowing you to quit the game while your ship is in deep space (this seems like something that probably should have been in the game anyway), a “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary, and fourth landing site on Earth. Fingers-crossed that the fourth location is Slough, can’t think of a town that more needs to be scorched by rockets repeatedly every few minutes.

To put this in perspective, Planet Labs, a business started by ex-NASA employees – y’know, folk who sent real things into space – got off the ground with £13m.

Here are those remaining stretch goals:

$15 million

  • Additional flyable ship class: escort carrier

  • The Upgrade Handbook: an extra 42-page manual that walks players through the process of customizing and overclocking their ship systems! (PDF free to all backers before $15 million)

$16 million

  • Arena mode: The next generation of Wing Commander’s TrainSim allows pilots to test out their combat skills against friends or strangers in a simulation. Gain valuable combat experience without the downside of losing your ship in the game universe! Place bets on competitions across the galaxy.

  • A laser pistol for every pledger before this point. Keep your ship safe from boarders with a pistol by your side.

Cheers, PC Gamer.
