Starcraft legends are returning to play an Archon exhibition showmatch

Starcraft Legends Archon Showmatch

Starcraft II’s World Champsionship Series Global Final is a) a bit of a mouthful and b) approaching imminently on 1 November with a prize pool of $250,000. With such a lot of high-stakes play already scheduled, Blizzard evidently thought it might be fun to bring back a few familiar faces from yesteryear, and have them face off in a ‘Legendary’ exhibition showmatch in the game’s 2v2 Archon mode on 6 November.

How many of our best PC strategy games have you tank-rushed?

The first veteran player Blizzard presumably located at his mountaintop retreat to cajole into returning one last job is Lim ‘NesTea’ Jae Duk, who Blizzard describe as “one of the most accomplished and innovative StarCraft II players of all time.” NesTea won three GSL championships within a two year period, and will be playing Zerg on 1 Nov. But with whom?

The hugely experienced Hong ‘YellOw’ Jin Ho joins him. YellOw was at the first ever Blizzcon in 2005, where he won a StarCraft: Brood War championship, and he regularly reached finals after that. YellOw and NesTea are former team-mates, so they’ll be more than familiar with each other’s tactics.

They’ll be facing off against “two of the greatest Terran players of all time”. Those are Blizzard’s words. I’m really not qualified to make that judgement. Four-time GSL championJung ‘Mvp’ Jong Hyun makes up half the Terran duo, widely considered the best SCII player of all-time.

Joining him is Lim ‘Boxer’ Yo Hwan, “a legend from StarCraft: Brood War, one of the most well-known esports players ever, and with good reason.” Boxer dominated the Starcraft competitive scene as it burgeoned from humble beginnings to big-money global spectacle.

That clash of considerable SC titans takes place at Blizzcon in Anaheim, California and will be broadcast from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. PST on Friday, November 6. Full details of the match, the competitors, and more, are over on the Battlenet blog.
