Steam stats shows more users on Windows 8 than MacOS

Blimey. Gabe Newell may have labelled Windows 8 “a catastrophe”, but that hasn’t stopped his platform benefitting from its users. Steam stats for November have revealed that nearly one in 20 Steam users is running the client on Windows 8. That’s more than use the service on Mac.

The stats come with one major caveat. Valve’s hardware surveys are made up of information collected from Steam users who’ve consented to send it, and don’t represent each and every one of us. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the numbers.

Windows 7 continues to lead the pack, with an unsurprising landslide of 72.56%. XP and Vista follow, clinching 10.83% and 8.07% of users respectively.

Beyond that, Windows 8 brings up the rear. Windows 8 32 bit and 64 bit users combined total 4.69%, while MacOS 10 in its various forms stacks up at 3.26%. See the list in its entirety below.

Windows 7 64 bit – 58.58%
Windows 7 – 13.98%
Windows XP 32 bit – 10.36%
Windows Vista 64 bit – 4.77%
Windows 8 64 bit – 4.25%
Windows Vista 32 bit – 3.30%
MacOS 10.8.2 64 bit – 1.49%
MacOS 10.6.8 64 bit – 0.78%
MacOS 10.7.5 64 bit – 0.72%
Windows XP 64 bit – 0.47%
Windows 8 – 0.44%
