Subnautica Review

What strategies have you learned to survive in Subnautica?

Bill Murray (after 3 days 3 hours play time)

Never get off the boat.

Learn to avoid predators! For the first hour or two you'll probably barely leave the shallows. Hoarde everything. Stay close to the seafloor when you can, always have an eye out for predators, if you hear a spooky sound avoid it, do NOT swim out into the open sea!

After you get out of your life pod, I've found you just want to gather materials for food, water, two air tanks, and if you want to go to the kelp forest, fins. Once you get your first submarine, you want to go to an area on the map which has very good food which you can plant back at your base to have unlimited food.

How deep is the crafting in Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

The crafting has you gather materials and sometimes find fragments of the item you want to make. You scan the fragments with a scanner which allows you to make the item. You bring all the materials to a fabricator in your life pod (or your base if you built one) and it makes the item for you.

Moderately. Most recipes require raw materials, not intermediate crafted materials. A few more complex ones exist.

Deep? I guess you can say its deep ;-)

What can you craft in Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

Knives, oxygen tanks, fins, new divesuits with special abilities, stations to improve equipment, flashlights, dive scooters, scanners to unlock certain items, two different submarines, bases with special things inside such as aquariums and docks for one of your submarines, and loads of other things.

Anything you have a blue print for, which is almost exclusively survival tools, equipment, and food.

How good an FPS is Subnautica?

Menthol_Penguin (after 3 hours play time)

Well, it isn't an FPS, so no.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

It is not an FPS in the slightest.

How open is Subnautica to explore?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

The map is very open. If you have the proper gear, you can go pretty much anywhere on it. Although the map isn't randomly generated, it allows the devs to make very detailed environments.

TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

You have a very large open map, free for you to wander off in and get killed immediately.

How creative can you be in Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

The main creative aspect of Subnautica is the bases. Some people have made some really creative bases before. Someone even made a base built into some rock which you enter by being blown through some tunnels by current generators. I personally just make a few multipurpose rooms with storage, water filtration machines, some farms, and a few large aquariums because I have no creativity!

You can get somewhat creative with bases, and slap a few paint jobs on the sea moth.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Subnautica sale?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

Personally I bought it full price and it was worth it (got my 1 dollar = 1 hour on it too c:) though it all depends on how interested you are in the game. So I'd say you should decide yourself.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

Full price.

Have you bought anything in Subnautica? How happy were you with your purchase?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

Right now there isn't anything you can buy in-game, though you can buy hull plates from the market. The hull plates can't be bought in-game though and were gifts from the devs.

TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

There is no DLC

It isn't free to play...

How good are Unknown Worlds Entertainment at releasing regular updates?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

They've been doing very well on that front. You can expect stable updates with few bugs every month, and experimental updates which might have problems every day (if you choose to get experimental updates). Although, there was supposed to be a second march update (there was a smaller update early march) however it got canceled as the devs were too busy working on the Oculus Rift release of the game. The content that was supposed to come in that update will be released along with other things late-April though.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

Decent. Experimental updates come daily, stable every month or two. They're on track to finish the game by the end of this year.

Should you buy Subnautica now or wait for it to come out of Early Access?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

Depends on what you feel comfortable doing. I personally bought the game in early access as it looks and feels like a complete game. The main issue is that you can blow through all the content quite quickly, though it was made better in a recent update. It all depends on what you want to do.

Is Subnautica scary?

42
Menthol_Penguin (after 3 hours play time)

1094 days ago

Yes, but then I nearly drowned once so that affects my perception of it!

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

It starts out not scary at all, kinda pretty. Then you decide you want to explore. You find all these neat things and are having a good time, then you hear a monstrous roar and see a massive creature swimming towards you at high speeds.
TD;DR Yes.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

Some are kinda cute (like the peeper) and some are absolutely terrifying.

How much freedom does Subnautica give you?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

It gives you quite a bit of freedom. You can go anywhere on the map (as long as you have the proper equipment to do so) and can build bases wherever you please. You can also modify terrain using a tool called The Terraformer, but it's planned to be removed soon as it causes a lot of issues.

How good are the sounds in Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

In my experience they're very well made. You could hear a deep bellowing from above and look up to see a massive creature swimming overhead, or a distant roar getting louder and closer at an alarming rate. Sometimes an area that wouldn't normally be scary is due to the sounds of distant creatures coming from all directions.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

Very good.

How does Subnautica run on your PC?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

Usually around 40-60 fps although when loading a new area for the first time it will jump down to 5-30 fps.

763
TsunamiWombat (after 4 hours play time)

Occasional stutter, mostly do to the terraforming which will get removed eventually

How active is the multiplayer community for Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

There isn't multiplayer! Although someday in the future there might be, the devs just haven't yet as it would require a long period of no updates (we're getting monthly stable updates and daily experimental updates right now).

How good are the graphics in Subnautica?

scriblemelego (after 1 day 2 hours play time)

They're phenomenal and really help get you immersed in the environment. Although in my experience sometimes the surface water looks strange and pixelated.
