What can you craft in Subsistence?

Basebuilding parts in different shapes, several devices (oven, fridge, power generator etc.), weapons, tools, ammunition, clothing. Many of those things can be upgraded.

How deep is the crafting in Subsistence?

Regarding it's early access it's surprisingly deep. I.e. in order to upgrade a weapon you will have to build at least a foundation and a wall in order to be able to place the BCU, which allows access to advanced building.
The BCU also generates and stores power and mass. You will have to craft advanced power and mass storage and generators for each in order to craft a workbench.
Since upgrading need produced material you will also have to build a device to fragment ores.

How open is Subsistence to explore?

The map is limited by now (seems as it's planned to expand later on), but what's available can be accessed properly. The current map size is fine for single player (multiplayer is going to be added later on).

What strategies have you learned to survive in Subsistence?

Starting new is challenging and you probably need a few lives until you've figured out what to do, in order to not have to start all over all the time.
I.e. you only start with 2 matches, but will need a fire to keep yourself warm at night. Matches are one of those things, that have a chance to be found in the crates, that randomly spawn all over the map and you're not guaranteed to find enough matches to always survive the nights. Planning when to light a campfire is crucial. In order to avoid running out of matches you need to make sure to keep the fire lit as long as possible until you've found a decent amount of matches to randomly light a fire.

You also will have to plan properly since everything but logs is quite scarce.

Learning to effeciently plan what to do while it's daytime and keeping up the routines or coming back home (or have enough ressources to spend the night out in nature) is key.

You also will have to learn to slow down most of the time. Sprinting often results in missing crates or plants, running into wild animals which are most likely to kill you or simply geting lost and not finding the way back home in time.

Learning that dying every now and then might happen. Also how to prepare to not lose too much due to that or how to find your corpse in time, to pick your inventory up again.

Should you buy Subsistence now or wait for it to come out of Early Access?

It depends. If you are willing to learn and like a challenging experience I'd totally recommend it. If you get frustrated easily and want to play more casually you'd probably want to wait what the game is like, when it's finished.

How good are ColdGames at releasing regular updates?

The developer (who's developing the game as a passion project in his spare time) updated the game quite frequently by now. He also is pretty active in the Steam forums, answering questions and discussing ideas.

They are fine, from what I can say.

How does Subsistence run on your PC?

Smooth. I experienced 2 crashes in like 30 hours gametime. Since it's auto saving frequently, it hasn't been a problem at all.
