If you’ve recently found yourself gripped by an unshakable desire to rip off all your clothes and leap into the dark abyss of the sea, then you’ve probably just been affected by the announcement that Sunless Sea, Failbetter Games’ beautifully written nautical nightmare, is getting its first piece of DLC.
Take a look at our Sunless Sea review to see what we thought of the base game.
Zubmariner is the name, and instead of sailing across the haunting unterzee, an ocean underground, you’ll be exploring its depths, instead, at a zubmarine captain.
Beneath the untersee, there’s seemingly plenty to see, from huge, fleshy sea beasts like the Thalatte — Failbetter describes it as an “unfinished vivisection” — and even new ports like Wrack, a city made from shipwrecks.
And if the base game got you used to depending on the light of your ship to keep your crew sane and the beasts lit up, then you might be distressed to hear that under the unterzee, your zubmarine’s light only illuminates the area within its beam, and many a beastie lurks beyond it.
