BioWare to shut down The Old Republic’s Asia-Pacific servers

SWTOR’s Asia-Pacific servers have reportedly been on the wane for a while now. As such BioWare have been looking for a solution in consultation with the game’s community, and last night announced that they’ve found one, after a fashion – they’ll be doing away with them altogether, and offering their players a one-way ticket to North America.

APAC server refugees will be granted a Free Character Transfer, allowing them to hop over to the hopefully-bustling NA servers of the same type. Mastar Dar’Nala (PvP) will transfer to The Bastion (PvP), Gav Daragon (RP-PvE) will transfer to Begeren Colony (RP-PvE), and Dalborra (PvE) will transfer to The Harbinger (PvE).

“The one common theme from the suggestions, which we heard clearly, is that everyone wants the opportunity to play on higher populated servers,” explained BioWare’s Eric Musco.

“With this in mind, we have evaluated all of the options and determined that the best solution, that will offer the best long term play experience, is to merge the APAC servers with higher populated North American servers.”

So that’s decided. But Musco warns that server closure will be a “multistep process”. Before anything else can happen, the transfer system will need to be updated to bring it in line with both recent changes and SWTOR’s upcoming 2.0 patch.

Musco couldn’t offer an ETA on the migration, but promised more information in the near future.

“We are moving as quickly as we can to make this happen, but we want to make sure this is a smooth transition, so it will take some time,” he said.

If you’re on an affected server, let us know your thoughts on BioWare’s decision.
