Exodus at BioWare continues as SWTOR creative director Daniel Erickson leaves Austin studio

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Do you like riddles? Here’s one: An MMO veteran, a famous doctor, and a creative director – who at one time cited BioWare as the sole reason for his getting into development – all walk out of the RPG behemoth’s Austin offices, and none of them return for work the next day. How can that be?

No official word from BioWare yet – instead, a new Twitter account for a @DanielAErickson, ‘game director and loudmouth’.

“As part of leaving BioWare I’m officially starting a twitter account for job hunt and design thoughts,” reads his first tweet.

“When 90% of the industry is saying the exact same thing (social, mobile, FTP!) a huge number of people are going to lose that race,” continues Erickson.

“Job hunt thoughts: If you think a monetization approach is the same thing as a game idea I don’t know why we’re talking.”

In what I’m sure Erickson would confirm as an only tangentially-related matter, SWTOR goes free to play next month.

There’s something amiss in Austin. But what is it?
