How much attention do you pay to guns in videogames? If the answer is A LOT then Synthetik has loaded itself into a cartridge that is about to be fired directly into your skull. That’s not a threat. It is, however, an isometric shooter created in the mould of the classics of the genre from the ’90s. Remember those? Blimey, what a time to be alive, eh?
But stop there, as that’s where the comparison to that decade ends. Eject it from your mind, please. For Synthetik is supremely modern in how it approaches this style of shooter. That means it has all the trappings of a ‘rogue-lite’ mixed with gun customisation. If you love guns then you’ll have a great time fiddling with them all in Synthetik.
There are over 80 weapons in the game, and each of them can be fitted with a healthy range of attachments and upgrades, which are then supplemented with your choice of 125 offensive and defensive items. You can even pick up various ammo types to better deal with the more challenging opponents.
Played Gears of War? If you have, you’ll be familiar with its active reload system. Synthetik has its own version of that – rewarding you for being precise with your weapon reloads. But you have to be careful as you can also cause your gun to jam. Beyond that, the game has movement-based recoil to get used to alongside headshots if you think you’re a real hot shot.
We haven’t even got to the customisable class specialisations, modular difficulty, and two player online co-op. But that’s the original version of Synthetik. The game recently got its first expansion, called Legion Rising, which not only upgrades the base game, it adds new boss encounters, items, and weapons.
