Telltale’s next project is the Marvel universe, assembling in 2017

Marvel Telltale 2017

In terms of hitting the jackpot, Telltale Games have arguably already done it several times over. From The Walking Dead to snapping up huge licenses like Game of Thrones, it seemed like the little adventure company couldn’t get much bigger. Except now they have, by snapping up a deal with Marvel.

“Announced this evening in San Francisco, we’re excited to reveal an all-new partnership with the incredible team at Marvel Entertainment,” Telltale wrote on their blog. “We’ll be teaming up on the development of an upcoming Telltale game series project set to premiere in 2017!”

Unfortunately so far, the only information revealed is that the game will release in 2017. So speculation can start right now. Will it focus on a specific set of characters, like The Avengers, or span the entire Marvel universe? Will it tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and be connected to the films and TV series, or – like The Walking Dead game – will it be rooted in the comics rather than the live action adaptations. And, considering how much punching there is in superhero stories, will Telltale create a more engaging way to play out action scenes?

One thing’s for sure: considering Telltale’s track record on comic adaptations with The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, the Marvel license is almost certainly in safe hands. More so than awesome action scenes, Marvel is about brilliant characters, they way they interact, and how their choices affect the world. That’s exactly what Telltale does best.
