Five years since launch and two years since its first two episodes released, The Long Dark’s third episode is at last nearly here. Titled Crossroads Elegy, the new installment to pick up and continue the game’s story – this time from Astrid’s perspective. Developer Hinterland has provided only the most teasing details on what to expect, but you won’t have long to wait regardless.
Episode 3: Crossroads Elegy lands on October 22. It’s “the culmination of the foundational work we did in Redux,” director Raphael van Lierop says in a blog post, “and presents a series of events experienced from Astrid’s point of view. In our own way, and in our own style, it moves the story forward. I don’t expect all of you to like it.”
That implication of potential controversy is interesting, to say the least, but it will be congruent with what’s come before. “It’s a story that is true to the world of The Long Dark, true to Astrid, and I believe, also true to the world we live in today.”
Even with the lengthy wait between, The Long Dark sales have continued strong – according to an infographic alongside today’s announcement, the game’s surpassed 3.3 million units sold.

The developers plan to share a bit more on the Episode 3 ahead of release, and it’s not the only big update for The Long Dark on the horizon – some substantial additions for Survival mode are set to land this December. Once again, we’ll hear more about those ahead of launch.
