CD Projekt Rich: Witcher 3 revenues total $250 million, trilogy sells 25 million

Witcher sales figures

CD Projekt, the group that owns both famed developer CD Projekt Red and GOG, has announced their 2016 financial results and ho-boy, they’ve made some dollars and cents. Reporting a net profit of 251 million Polish Zloty (~64 million USD) for the year, they’ve released some rather nice statistics on how their most famous game series is getting along. Spoilers: very well indeed.

Here’s what we know about the next big CDPR project – Cyberpunk 2077.

In fact, 2016 was 75% as good as 2015 for the company, even though only Blood and Wine were released in that period, versus the base game itself the year before. They mention that despite spending a lot on future projects – specifically, Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent, along with development of Blood and Wine earlier in the year – they still managed to “post 204 million PLN in positive cash flows.”

Meanwhile, The Witcher can now say these things about itself, were it to grow a mouth:

  • Cumulative revenues from sales of The Witcher 3 topped 1 billion PLN in 1.5 years.
  • Since the release of the first instalment in The Witcher trilogy CD Projekt has sold over 25 million copies of The Witcher games.

In other words, ya’ll are really into dark, little-bit-sexy fantasy. In case the success of Game of Thrones, Vikings, Camelot and Spartacus wasn’t enough evidence.

“For years we have consistently prioritized quality and focused on a limited range of products. The persistently strong sales of the entire The Witcher series vindicate our approach and contribute to long-term appeal of our releases,” says president and presumably extremely rich man, Adam Kiciński. “Between the launch of The Witcher in 2007 and the end of 2016 we have sold over 25 million copies of The Witcher games.

“This year we will continue to expand The Witcher brand – it is, after all, the year of Gwent. We’re in the process of organizing the game’s first major tournament, with a 100 thousand USD prize pool. Another crucial round of beta tests will commence in spring, with the retail release to follow in the second half of 2017.”

There’s a little more in the full financials, including more mentions of Cyberpunk than we’ve seen out of CD Projekt in some time – probably because it’s a good way to assure investors something big is on the way.
