Thief trailer unveiled, Garrett has a new voice

Thief is out of the shadows; here’s our Thief review.

It’s here. Eidos Montreal have pulled back the curtain on the trailer for the fourth Thief game which, you’ll remember, is now simply titled Thief. At just over a minute in length, it’s the very definition of brevity, and though it’s an impressive thing, you may well get something of a sense of deja vu when you watch.

Here it is:

Ah yes, the exit via the window when the job is done, Corvo-style. It’s rather a noisy way to end the day and the whole leaving-an-exploding-thing isn’t exactly subtle, but I suppose we all had moments like that when we played the previous Thief games, yes? No?

It’s a fine seventy seconds of footage, though it doesn’t show off any of the more distinctive elements of the Thief universe such as the paranormal, the religious extremism and the just plane weird. The trailer also gives Garrett a new, rather less coarse voice, and fans are clamouring for the original voice actor, Stephen Russell, over on Thief’s official Facebook page. Being a bit of a purist, I’m tempted to join them.

The trailer was leaked earlier today by GamesHQMedia. This official release comes with a short introductory spiel to set the scene:

“There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change.”
