Trepang2 taps into something that a lot of FPS games either neglect or don't recognize as being important: terror. Through the sheer volume of the guns and the fierce screams and barks of your enemies, Trepang2 makes you feel vulnerable. You spend the early levels burrowed into a corner, trying to stave off a panic attack as the walls explode around you. Later, the dynamic is flipped. You become the terror, and what's scary about Trepang2 is the amount of bodies you stack up, and the gratuitous gore that bursts forth from every one. Inspired by the superlative FEAR, Trepang2 is better than Doom Eternal, Titanfall 2, and most of the other modern FPS darlings. If you've never tried it, now's the time.
Dark, uncompromising, and atmospheric, in Trepang2 you play a super soldier, created by one mega corporation in order to wage war on another. Not only are you practically invincible, you can slow down time and wield even the heaviest weapons with motile ease - in the final few levels, you chew through your enemies with akimbo SPAS-12 shotguns. The weapons are voluminous. The goons are plentiful. Hitting the bullet time button turns every gunfight into a brutal, bloody, slow-motion ballet. But at its core, Trepang2 is more than an FPS game.
Without spoiling the story, where a lot of shooters want you to feel pure, unmitigated joy when you kill, and kill, and kill, Trepang2 - like the supremely underrated Kane and Lynch 2 - uses the four-digit body count to more acerbic effect. It's not that you're supposed to feel bad. On the contrary, the game encourages you to relish all the bloodshed. It's such ghoulish fun that it turns you into a monster - you don't just kill by the passel, you love it as well. Trepang2 becomes a horror game where you're the monster.
If you need more convincing, of the almost 9,000 user reviews that have been posted on Trepang2's Steam page so far, 93% are positive. You can also try it before you buy it thanks to the demo. But if you want to commit, Trepang2 is now available cheaper than ever, down to the historically low price of $14.99 / £12.49. Fast, furious, and fueled by fear, if you want to play one of the greatest shooters on PC, just head here.
