Twitch streams now support 1080p/60fps video

If you’re into streaming or watching games being played over on Twitch, the service just got a nifty upgrade. Instead of capping bitrate at 3.5 megabits, Twitch now recommend 3-6 megabits for most streams. Viewers will also get a number of new quality options on top of this power increase for streamers.

You’ll be able to see your favourite Twitch personalities play our list of upcoming PC games in higher quality.

Twitch are rolling out some new quality options, so you can choose different resolutions even if the ‘source’ quality isn’t available. Working in tandem with transcode updates, streamers should be able to more easily stream high quality video to their audience.

Support for these new features will be rolling out over the next few weeks. If you visit Twitch Inspector, you can check if you have Transcode V2 - if you do, you’re good to go.

Twitch notes that not everyone should attempt to stream in 1080p, however. A steady stream is better than a crisp slideshow. Again, Twitch Inspector can help you benchmark.
