Battle for Azeroth is the fastest-selling World of Warcraft expansion ever

World of Warcraft's Battle for Azeroth expansion is the game's fastest-selling yet, topping more than 3 million sales on day one

Battle for Azeroth

The latest World of Warcraft expansion, Battle for Azeroth, is the game’s fastest-selling new release ever. In a press release issued earlier today, Blizzard revealed that 3.4 million units of the new expansion were sold worldwide on its first day alone. Not only is that a sales record for the franchise, it also happens to make Battle for Azeroth “one of the fastest-selling PC games of all-time.”

Of course, that was ten days ago, so we’re likely to have seen those sales continue to climb since day one. In a statement, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said that “the launch is the just the beginning,” and that there’s plenty more to come in the rest of the expansion.

On that front, he certainly wasn’t kidding. September sees the beginning of Battle for Azeroth’s first raid, Uldir, set in an ancient titan facility housing some Old God experiments that have gone very wrong. There’s also Stormgarde, the first Warfront – a 20-play co-op battle mode that’s a little more like an RTS than a traditional MMO.

After those raids, there will, of course, be further developments in Battle for Azeroth’s story. Blizzard doesn’t seem to have too much to share on that front at the moment, but there are distant rumblings on the horizon suggesting that the Old Gods won’t be content with their brief outing in Uldir. Expect to see more story unfold soon, as well as the final Warbringers video. This time around, it’ll star Azshara, putting the minor players who have come before well and truly in their place.
