WWE 2K21 is cancelled

Oh, no, what a shame...

There will be no WWE 2K21. After years of ups and downs with the licensed wrestling series, last year’s WWE 2K20 marked an extra-low point – and with the added uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, many fans were left to wonder whether a new entry in the annual series is coming or not.

Now, WWE itself has confirmed there will be no new 2K game this year. During today’s first quarter financial earnings call, an investor asked if the annual game would have an effect on WWE’s budget for the fiscal year. Interim CFO Frank A Riddick responds that “there’s not going to be a launch of the game this year.” No further information was provided.

Earlier this month, rumours about WWE 2K21’s cancellation began to swirl following a video from former wrestling game developer Justin Leeper, where he cited anonymous sources at 2K in reporting that the new game was not going forward. Leeper suggested that a “different kind of WWE game” would fill in the gap.

After the abysmal quality of WWE 2K20, it’s unlikely fans will miss the game this year, and hopefully this will give the developers a chance to get the series back on track with more development time.

For now, you’ll just have to make due with Fire Pro Wrestling World, or perhaps some of the excellent fighting games available on PC.
