XCOM 2 co-op mod now available, will eventually support up to 12 players

XCOM 2 Co-Op Tactical mod

XCOM 2's Tactical Co-op mod is awaiting you and a pal to defend Earth from sectoid scum after entering a beta phase of development this weekend.

For more of the best strategy games on PC, check these tactical beauties.

The mod, developed by Team Dragonpunk – somewhat confusingly marked as "(Official)" on the Steam Workshop despite no tangible involvement from Firaxis – so far only allows two players to join forces, and requires a bit of fiddly setting up.

However Firaxis have told the development team that they will be approving code in an upcoming patch to allow up to 12 commanders, so we're waiting on a mod which lets each person take control of one squad member and turn the game into a turn-based version of Leroy Jenkins' famously doomed WoW raid. (Sorry, this isn't a BlizzCon post is it? I'm not sure how to stop thinking about Blizzard games. Help.)

Do remember, this is a beta mod, a labour of love for some punk coding dragons over 10 months, so there's bound to be some hiccups in an already bug-prone game so, look, we're just saying don't be too angry if your best sniper stops taking orders from either of you and runs into the nearest Chrysalid nest.

Here's some footage of how it works:

I don't know, Firaxis missed the window with me on this game. It's one of my few regrettable purchases of the fiasco that was 2016 for gaming. Does the game still struggle on up to par systems? I awaited patches for months, and some were helpful, but ultimately didn't measure up to the standard most were expecting.

I think this mod, while certainly impressive, won't garner much more than a niche group of players.

I was playing the game in co-op with a friend at release. Although not properly, since we used Moonlight and Nvidia's co-op feature. I had to take control of my friend's mouse when I played with my characters (which I had made myself of course).

I'm glad they finally got somewhere with the mod though, seeing as it looked like BS from the beginning when they promised co-op support within two weeks of release and then slowly added weeks onto that.

This won't get be back into the game though since I've already experienced it in co-op (including timed missions which isn't supported in the mod).

I am glad that it actually happened though, because a game like XCOM really should support co-op, and it was a lot more fun to play the game with a friend than by myself.
