Beneath a Steel Sky 2 confirmed, as Broken Sword Kickstarter ends at double its target

A month ago, Revolution Software tapped in a tentative goal of $400,000 for their Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse Kickstarter project. They’ve wound up with closer to $800,000 clutched to their surprised bosoms and – spurred on by their success – the studio has confirmed plans to develop a sequel to 1994’s Beneath a Steel Sky.

Development of Beneath a Steel Sky 2 will begin after the release of Serpent’s Curse, the fifth Broken Sword game to date, despite the project falling short of the $1 million stretch goal the game was originally promised at.

“We’re delighted by the recent level of interest in a sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky and are currently discussing design ideas for this project which we plan to go into development following the release of Broken Sword – The Serpent’s Curse,” Revolution’s Tony Warriner told Develop.

“We’re deeply touched that our Steel Sky fans are as enthusiastic today as they were when the original game released in 1994.”

These days, Beneath a Steel Sky comes free with an account on GOG. It’s a sci-fi point-and-click adventure game with art courtesy of Watchmen alumnus Dave Gibbons, but don’t go in expecting weighty Moore-isms – tonally, it’s lighter than air. Space’ll do that to you.

First, though, there’s Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse, now entering development with $771,561 in fan-pledged funds behind it. Of its 14,032 backers, 26 pledged more than $1,000, and two offered more than $5,000 each. Learn more about Kickstarter’s mega-backers here.
