Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition yanked from e-stores, leaves Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition in limbo

Very sad news: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition has been pulled from sale via Apple and Beamdog due to “contractual issues” that Beamdog and Overhaul Games are having. It seems the new patch for the game will not be available until the issues are resolved, and will prevent the launch of Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition as well. Woes!

This was posted earlier on the Baldur’s Gate website re: the game’s removal from sale:

“Unfortunately, until this matter is resolved, we are unable to release the latest Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition patch or Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Android.

This also prevents the launch of Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. I sincerely apologize to the series’ fans and promise we are working diligently to remedy the situation.

Trent Oster

President, Beamdog & Overhaul Games”

As Jeremy reported for us back in October, Overhaul Games came together to work on another update of a ‘90s BioWare classic, MDK2 HD. Trent Oster co-founded BioWare in the mid-’90s andworked on Baldur’s Gate, led development on Neverwinter Nights and its two expansions – including latter-day classic Hordes of the Underdark – and built the engine wot powers Dragon Age, before leaving BioWare in 2009 to form digital distribution siteBeamdog.

It’s a shame that Oster’s classic games are on hold now. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition has also been in development for a while, and cannot be sold without these issues being resolved. The FAQ on the site states, “We are unable to discuss details of the complex legal matters surrounding this issue at this time. Please be aware that we are extremely unhappy with the situation and are doing our best to work past it. We have put a lot of hard work into this series, and are eager for fans to see it.”

Overhaul were due to release a patch for the already released Enhanced Edition, which they say on the FAQfeatures:

An updated user interface that allows for high-resolution scaling and transparency.

A new renderer featuring enormous performance improvements, and compatibility enhancements for Intel graphics chipsets.

A new font system for sharper, clearer text.

Full German language support, including new German VO for the expanded content.

Subtitles in movies.

Over 135 gameplay fixes and enhancements.

“We are unable to release this patch until all issues with our publishing partner have been resolved,” they also add.
