From tomorrow friendships will crumble, brother will turn on brother, and marriages will snap under the duress of the Wake Island dog tag challenge. DICE are pitting PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 players against each other in a race 19,420 rounds.

Stakes laid out below and more fighting talk, like what they have at the start of historical war movies.

Since time began – with the release of Battlefield 1942 – Wake Island has been a mainstay of the franchise appearing in subsequent releases, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1943, and Battlefield 3’s Back to Kharkand DLC.

From tomorrow, which according to DICE’s blog is the ” September27st”, every round played on Battlefield 3’s version of Wake Island will count towards a tally. When a platform hits 19.420 rounds they unlock a new set of dog tags for all players on that platform.

Now, DICE say “this first challenge won’t see any losers”, and when one platform reaches the target it doesn’t stop others from managing it. That wording does imply future challenges will have adefinitivewinner and an exclusive prize though.

So, let the in-fighting begin tomorrow and let it be brutal. I want the thumbs of at least 30 console players on my desk by Friday.
