If you didn’t know already, Activision and Infinity Ward have dumped zombies in the ‘sooo last season’ pile. For Ghosts – which we didn’t like all that much in our Call of Duty: Ghosts review – the pulpy zombies mode was replaced with the equally pulpy Extinction game, where players attempt to out-gun a vicious pack of aliens. And right on cue, as in previous years, this mode is getting some DLC to expand the story. The first of four episodes, Nightfall, is on its way, and promises to blow open the secrets behind the extra-terrestrial threat.
Nightfall will see plenty of explosive gunplay, but also the discovery of the origin of the alien enemy. Obviously the team that was called to duty have been taking a leaf from XCOM’s book, not only combating the enemy but using all kinds of laser and biological goo technology against them. The team will probably need a little more than small arms though, considering Nightfall’s big boss is about the size of your average mansion.
For all the bright coloured particle effects and scaly alien menaces, Nightfall is traditional Call of Duty, and that doesn’t just apply to the gunplay. Nightfall releases as part of the Onslaught DLC pack 28th January on Xbox Live, and on other platforms – our dear PC included – are “to follow”. Expect it on Steam in about three months, then.
