Team Liquid, best known for their involvement in other, more real-time strategy games like StarCraft, will be launching a Civilization VI tournament so their new hire has a competition to play in.

Stephen ‘MrGameTheory’ Takowsky (that’s him, up there, surrounded by Hulk statues) is the first to join Team Liquid as captain of the competitive Civilization division – having previously been playing on their Clash Royale team – suggesting the organisation has plans to add more players to a roster for the newly released game.

Takowsky himself is one of the most prolific Civilization IV and V competitive players in the world, holding the top spot in three separate community-organised leagues across both games. He also holds in-game records for the most ladder victories in 1v2, 1v3, 1v4 and 1v5 matches in Civ IV, so he certainly knows his way around the game board.

Co-owner of Team Liquid, Steven ‘Liquid112’ Arhancet, was heavily involved with Civ IV’s competitive scene and was inspired to revitalise that community with the release of the newest game in the series.

“When Civ V came out I was too focused on building the foundation of what would become Team Liquid to participate as actively in the multiplayer community,” Arhancet said in the post announcing Liquid’s entry to pro Civ play. “However, with the release of Civ VI and after spending hours watching twitch streams, looking at the various game modes, mod features, and the hints to the resources, and noticing the new focus on FFA multiplayer, I’m once again excited.”

The game may only have been out for a few days but Arhancet is already at work creating tournaments for old communities to rally around for the future.

“We’ll be launching a tournament soon,”he said, “and the revitalization of the Civplayers and Civfanatic communities will be a great start to what will become of the scene.”
