Double Fine let you build your own space station in Spacebase DF-9

Spacebase DF-9 Double Fine

One of the game’s developed by Double Fine during last year’s Amnesia Fortnight was a god game where you’d build your own space station. Now Spacebase DF-9’s being released as a fully-fledged standalone game and you can buy yourself early access to get playing the thing now.

First things first, an announcement trailer:

You can buy a copy of the game from $25. That grants you early access to the current build of the game through Steam. It’ll update each time Double Fine release new content.

There’s a fairly extensive developer blog that tracks how Double Fine turned the prototype built in two weeks during Amnesia Fortnight into the game released today. At one point a so-called “bug” meant aliens drank beer from their rifles. That’s no bug that’s just aliens being hard!

Double Fine’s also released a 40 minute video of them playing the game:

I am playing this! It's the first game in a while that I haven't stopped after an hour or so just to take a bit of a breather, just because it's lovely to play. I only stopped because it crashed.

Update for those considering buying at this stage. It's pretty limited, probably a couple of hours before you've done pretty much all you can with the content available. There are only four or five types of rooms to build and no progression. The AI needs work, and it crashed maybe four times in around three hours.

However. The interface is very intuitive, the graphics are clear and well made, and it has a quirky tongue in cheek atmosphere. It also has space chickens. think it will be great with more development, but if this was an alpha review I'd say wait.

Looks good, but I would like to see how it develops before dropping 25 dollars on it.

I'm very interested in this game but will wait until it is out of Alpha at least before I buy it.
