It was surprising that a new Splinter Cell wasn’t announced during Ubisoft’s E3 show. The publisher seemed to be building up to it after the game’s protagonist, Sam Fisher, voiced by its original voice actor, Michael Ironside, appeared in Ghost Recon Wildlands. However, the game was nowhere to be seen at the press conference.
In a post-show interview with Geoff Keighley on the YouTube Gaming channel, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot took a direct question on the future of Splinter Cell and said, “We love the brand. We really want it to come back but I can’t say much today.”

It’s no confirmation of a new game but it is, at least, good news to know it is not off the cards. The last Splinter Cell game, Blacklist, didn’t immediately spawn a sequel. There were grumblings among Splinter Cell fans that the series was moving away from its roots, a change that seemed to be typified by the replacement of Ironside.
It would be fascinating to see what Ubisoft would do with a new Splinter Cell. Would the publisher respond to criticism and move back to a more traditional Splinter Cell (which it seems could be the case with Ironside being back on the books), or would it spin out the Spies vs. Mercs multiplayer mode – something which more readily fits the live game format of modern Ubisoft games?
