Reigns claims the Iron Throne with a Game of Thrones crossover

What if Game of Thrones was Tinder? That’s what Devolver Digital and Nerial aim to find out (kind of) with a new spin on their medieval strategy game Reigns.

Reigns: Game of Thrones, places the fates of all your favourite Westerosi characters in your hands in a deceptively simple gameplay concept, that sees you managing your kingdom by swiping left and right for pivotal decisions.

The original Reigns launched on PC and mobile platforms in 2016 and earned a spot in the top five games of the year both on the App Store and Google Play. A follow-up, Reigns: Her Majesty was launched last year.

All of the major players from the HBO show are represented here, including the likes of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, Melisandre, Gendry, Samwell Tarly, Varys and Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane.

The game will launch on Steam in October, several months before the ninth and final season of Game of Thrones airs on HBO and Sky Atlantic in the UK. All we know about the final season is that it will launch sometime in the first half of 2019, so Reigns’ take on George RR Martin’s fantasy world may have to tide you over.

The trailer is not dark or full of terrors, but it is rather adorable. You can view it below.

The Game of Thrones license has had a few videogame adaptations before, including the excellent Telltale Games series, and the not-so-excellent 2012 action-adventure game published by Atlus USA.

As a die-hard fan of the book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, I will, of course, be hoping for DLC packs for some of the more obscure characters in the lore. Could we see an appearance from Wyman Manderly? Maegor the Cruel? Victarion Greyjoy?! We’ll have to wait until Winter to find out.
