Survival horror is in a good place at the moment. Last year alone we had Resident Evil 7, The Evil Within 2, and Outlast 2 giving us the frights. It seems the genre will be getting off to a good start in 2018, too, as Remothered: Tormented Fathers leaves Early Access and comes out today. We are giving away 25 copies - you can find out how to win one below.
If you don't win this one you can always check out the best free PC games.
In Remothered, you play as a 35-year-old woman called Rosemary Reed who is investigating the disappearance of a girl called Celeste. She arrives at the house of an old man, Richard Felton, hoping to find some leads. Upon arrival, Rosemary finds that Richard's carer has been infected with a mysterious disease.
Later, when Richard discovers the true intentions behind Rosemary's visit, things go very bad for her. That's where you will come in, of course, playing as Rosemary as she tries to survive the horrors inside Richard's house, while also searching for Celeste.
You will be stalked around the house a lot, having to rely on stealth, hiding yourself and running away when found. Sound plays a big part, too, as it gives you clues as to what the monsters in the house are doing and what they are thinking, without having to expose yourself to them. It's also worth mentioning that Nobuko Toda - who has composed for Final Fantasy, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid - has contributed to the soundtrack.
The rest of the gameplay is a mix of puzzle solving and narrative moments, which are punctuated with intense cutscenes that involve plenty of screaming, tense silences, and scissors cutting through lips. Lovely.
