Maxis on the future of Sims: "If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5"

Sims 4

The Sims 4 has been out for less than a week and Maxis has made it clear they’re entirely focused on the success of The Sims 4, before even thinking about the next game. On The Sims official forums, producer Grant Rodiek quelled suggestions for the next Sims game from fans with some definitive statements.

“We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.”

The Sims 4 released only a few days ago; our Steve is going to play it until his “eyes fall out”. While some passionate fans were giving suggestions to what could be added or changed in the next game, producer Grant Rodiek stepped in to remind them not to get ahead of themselves. “We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.” said Rodiek.

When later challenged by fans, Rodiek clarified that it’s “not all or nothing”, but that “something has to pay for 5”. Seems like how game development usually works to me, but it's strange to think of a world without The Sims.

Is The Sims safe for now, or could this be the end of the iconic life simulator as we know it?

Holding a gun to a franchises head and saying "BUY THIS OR IT'S FUCKING DEAD" is a time honored EA tradition.

It never works.

To me, this suggests Maxis is under a lot of pressure to produce profits with Sims 4, after the Sim City debacle. Hearing people talk about Sims 5, because longtime fans look at 4 and go 'meh', likely induced panic and prompted the response.

Sim's 4 isn't bad by any stretch. Is it worth the money out of the box is the question? Or will fans just wait for the expansions to come out?

Thats true, but a cabinet maker doesn't sing a sob story to his clients if he goes out of business because YOU DIDN'T BUY ENOUGH COPIES OF MY SHELFLESS BOOKSHELF!

Everyone loves capitalism until it's time for them to fail in it. Maybe if Maxis had made a bug free game according to the desires of the market, rather than the unrealistic and myopic dictates of their corporate investors, they would be in a more stable position.

But that's the thing, right... it's the way the industry works. It's the same the world over. If a product doesn't sell, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify the investment in a sequel, which similarly might flop.

And yes, they're probably under a lot of pressure. This is no surprise. Games should be bought and played on their own merits, not due to external politics(and isn't that an absurd thing to call internet drama?)

The Sims has been dead for a long time. Just pull the plug already, Ea doesn't give a shit anyways.

I'm betting Rodiek isn't very popular at the moment in Maxis. What a bold statement he seems to have made on his own...

When you talk about the end of Sims, Sims 4 could fail completely and worst case scenario (for Maxis), the franchise would be sold to another company. Another Sims-like game will be produced, even if it ends up under another title and crowd-funded. I don't believe that we will end up with the Sims massive crowd-base being left without any new games, there's far too much money there for other companies to jump into.

As far as I'm concerned, Sims 4 is completely useless. Sims 3 does about all 4 does (and has pools and babies lol)...

Correction, SIMS 3 does much more than SIMS 4.

I downloaded the trial version, played a couple of hours, got bored and fired up 3.

Tried it again the next day, seemed even worse after playing an expanded 3. Why would I want to pay a heap of money to do far less than I can in the game I have?

Oh EA. They release a game at a price more expensive than almost every other PC title out there. They release it exclusively on a platform that is at best 20% of the market (http://www.gadgetreview.com/2013/11/steam-vs-origin-vs-uplay-comparison.html). They release the game with fewer features than the previous game with obvious (if unspoken) intent to release more content via similarly expensive expansion packs.

Long story short, I enjoy the Sims. I was excited about SimCity, and I was excited about The Sims 4. But somewhere along the line EA manages to stop me from buying their games, despite me really liking the idea of many of them. As a person with 386 (and counting) steam games, you really have to try to get me to NOT purchase your game. And something about EA's money grubbing just rubs me the wrong way, stopping my wallet on the way out of its digital pocket.

So sorry EA, and Sorry Sims 5, but I will not be playing (or buying) Sims 4. Which is a shame, because it looks pretty cool.

If they are so worried about it succeeding, then why are they being so shady about the mac release? That's telling a complete demographic of users that they can't play the game, even if they are willing to pay for the game. The thing about sims fans is we will pretty much buy anything sims related because we're dedicated, but now it is starting to seem like they don't really care about the fans anymore.

That clarifies the attitude of the company, treat the customers with contempt.

Please sell the franchise to someone who cares about the customers so that they can write a game based on customer wants, using modern computers with lots of memory and please, just get out of the way.

I never invested in 3 beyond the base. I was fun, just had a few problems holding my attention. From what I've seen, Sims 4 is a better "base" game.
