The side-scrolling shoot-’em-up had its heyday long ago, which means it can be hard these days to find a game in the genre worth playing – there just aren’t many of them being made. When Sine Mora came out in 2012, it proved to be worthy, delivering classic gameplay alongside impressive 3D setpieces, loads of weapon combinations to try out, and plenty of difficulty options.
But that was five years ago and the game has since aged. Fortunately, Sine Mora EX has recently come out, giving the game an update and adding new content. It brings a 16:9 aspect ratio, English voiceovers, local co-op for two players, three new versus modes, new challenge levels, improved rendering, and native 4K at 60fps.
You get all that along with its seven original stages – the story integrated seamlessly into the action – and its clever, time extension-based gameplay. Not to mention that the drama of it all is enhanced by Akira Yamaoka’s music (sound director on Silent Hill and Shadows of the Damned) and punctuated by boss designs from lauded anime creator Mahiro Maeda (responsible for The Animatrix, Kill Bill: Vol 1. and Blue Submarine No. 6).
