The Dwarves dev diary takes a look at crowd combat and a new fantasy universe

The Dwarves

King Art Games’ The Dwarves is an isometric RPG taking us to a world we’ve never been to before. Based on the books by Markus Heitz, The Dwarves takes place in Girdlegard, where players will take on the role of Tungdil, the only dwarf in his region. This first of a series of Kickstarter developer updates introduces us to Tungdil, and shows off what he’ll be able to do in the busy combat system.

The game world looks rather pretty, and characters are all voiced for that cinematic feel. But it’s the combat that looks to take the most from cinema; specifically it’s massive hordes of enemies that are influenced by Lord of the Rings’ huge battles.

Physics play a role in combat, with effects being able to knock back enemies and cause them to collide with each other, and separate their ranks when you push through them. Whilst other games like Diablo are known for their masses of enemies, The Dwarves looks like it’s really captured the feel of gangs of bodies whirling in a melee.

If what you see here impresses, the Kickstarter is still going. There’s 28 days on the clock, and quite a few thousand left to raise. But RPG heavyweights like Brian Fargo and Swen Vincke have good words to say about the project, so it looks like it could be a good bet.
