David Wehle, the creator of The First Tree, recommends his game for anyone who is a fan of Journey, Gone Home, and Firewatch. As you can guess from that list, The First Tree is primarily about exploration of an environment from which a poignant story unfolds. However, unlike those three games, in this one you play a fox.
As Wehle notes on the Steam page, however, The First Tree is not a "fox simulator, " but it is an "emotional, intimate story by a one-man team with an ending you won't soon forget." As the fox, you're trying to find your missing family among the beautiful meadows and forests you call home.
But you don't always follow a fox as there's a story that runs parallel to that one. You'll discover artifacts and small pockets of story as the fox that steadily reveals t he life of a son trying to reconnect with his father in Alaska. There is some light puzzle solving and platforming elements to The First Tree, but ultimately, this is a story-driven game that its creator hopes will give you a better understand of life and death.
